Plankton communities of the South Atlantic anticyclonic gyre ArchiMer
Piontkovski, Sa; Landry, Mr; Finenko, Zz; Kovalev, Av; Williams, R; Gallienne, Cp; Mishonov, Av; Skryabin, Va; Tokarev, Yn; Nikolsy, Vn.
Data collected during cruises of the Former Soviet Union (in 1963-1989) and the British Atlantic meridional transect program (in 1995-1999) were used to analyse macroscale patterns in phyto- and zooplankton biomass, size structure, species diversity, chlorophyll a, and plankton bioluminescence in the macroscale anticyclonic gyre of the South Atlantic Ocean. The spatial pattern of bioluminescence intensity was in good agreement with that of remotely sensed (CZCS) chlorophyll a, phosphate, salinity, and copepod species diversity index distributions especially in terms of geographic inclinations of the isolines, both associated with the north-westward pattern off the South equatorial current. Among the 416 copepod species recorded in samples, 51 species were...

Plankton diversity and limnological characterization in two shallow tropical urban reservoirs of Pernambuco State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida,Viviane L.S.; Melão,Maria da Graça G.; Moura,Ariadne N..
Plankton diversity, physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a were analyzed in two shallow urban reservoirs with different trophic degrees on Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. High eutrophication levels were observed in Apipucos reservoir, while Prata reservoir was considered oligotrophic. Values reported for physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a differed among the studied ecosystems. Richness and plankton diversity were higher in Apipucos reservoir especially for phytoplankton. The presence of potential toxic Cyanophyceae in both reservoirs reflects a problem mainly to Prata reservoir, which is used for public water supply. Differences were observed for some variables among sites of study in Apipucos reservoir, while the...

Plankton size distributions and trophic relations before and after the construction of the storm-surge barrier in the Oosterschelde estuary OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Herman, P.M.J.; Van Rijswijk, P.; Vink, M.; Bakker, C..
Phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass distributions were calculated on a carbon basis for the inland part of the Oosterschelde, in the period before (1983), during (1984, 1986) and after (1987, 1988) the construction of the storm-surge barrier. In all years studied, both phytoplankton and zooplankton distributions are very irregular, and little consistent patterns emerge. The data were used to test the model of Sheldon et al. (1977). The observed standing stock ratios of zooplankton to phytoplankton agree with the model predictions in 1983, and are slightly higher during the period 1984-1987. In 1988, the model predictions are very different from the observed values, because of important changes in the zooplankton species abundance occurring in this year.

Population dynamics of Pseudevadne tergestina (Branchiopoda: Onychopoda) in Guanabara Bay, Brazil BABT
Marazzo,Andrea; Valentin,Jean Louis.
Populations of Pseudevadne tergestina were studied in Guanabara Bay, southeastern Brazil, to assess temporal variations in density and population dynamics. Data on temperature, salinity and zooplankton samples were taken from the superficial water of a fixed station, every 3 - 4 days, from February 2 through August 1, 2000. The highest abundance of this species was observed in March, when densities varied widely, from 20 to 600 ind. m-3. Population parameters were calculated, such as birth rate (from 0.25 to 0.90 ind.-1.day-1), growth rate (from -1.30 to 2.09 day-1 ) and death rate ( from -1.6 to 1.9 day-1 ) Start of population could be attributed to the increase of temperature and to the hatching of resting eggs. The population collapsed in fall-winter,...

Prey selectivity and functional response by larval red-eyed tetra Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (Steindachner, 1907) (Characiformes: Characidae) BABT
Alanis,Jorge Gallardo; Sarma,S.S.S.; Nandini,S..
Studies were carried out to quantify the functional response and prey selectivity of larval (1-5 weeks old) of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae, a widely cultured ornamental fish, using four rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus, B. havanaensis, B. patulus and B. rubens) as prey. Regardless of larval age, B. havanaensis was not selected, while B. rubens and B. calyciflorus were preferred. B. patulus was selected only after three weeks. When fed B. calyciflorus, the larvae showed increased prey consumption with increasing age, but remained as plateau around 80 prey individuals. M. sanctaefilomenae consumed much lower individuals of both B. havanaensis and B. patulus, while B. rubens was consumed in higher numbers starting from the first week (about 35 ind. larva-1...

Temperoni, B..
Oithona nana (Copepoda: Cyclopoida)is a widely-distributed neritic species, which often comprises up to 90 percentage of the zooplankton in many coastal areas. This small copepod plays an important role as a dominant prey in the diet of Engraulis anchoita larvae, which is a main component of major ecological relevance in the pelagic food webs of the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic Ocean). The objective of this study was to estimate, for the first time, the seasonal variation of O. nana secondary production in a temperate region: coastal waters off Buenos Aires province, Argentina, at the EPEA Station (Estación Permanente de Estudios Ambientales, (38°28' S-57°41' W). Zooplankton samples (N=14)were taken by oblique tows of a Minibongo net (mouth diameter: 0.18 m;...

Gervasi, E; Jeuniaux, C; Dauby, P.
Chitin was estimated in samples of planktonic crustaceans living in Calvi Bay (Corsica). The percentages of chitin, with respect to dry weight, are comprised between 3.10% in Clausocalanus spp. and 12.22% in Cladocera (mainly Evadne ). The percentage of chitin remained approximatively constant during larval development in Calanus helgolandicus (3.26%). Using these results and the values of total biomass and production estimated by Dauby (1985) at the same place during a complete annual cycle (1983-1984), chitin biomass and production were calculated for every planktonic crustacean species (or group of species) and for the whole crustacean plankton. Daily chitin production was maximum during May (20.06 mg.m super(-2)/d). As far as the whole year is...

Buchet, Vincent; Palvadeau, Hubert; Boussard, O..
Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The achieved results show that weaning with intermediary phases (sequences 2 or 3) yield best results. Furthermore the phase with artemia yields, systematically, better results than with harvested zooplankton ; then artemia seems a excellent substitute food representing a...

Valencia, B.; Giraldo, A.; Ramírez, D. G..

Proposal of a trophic relationship between Chaetognatha and Cnidaria based on Mitochondrial COI sequences ArchiMer
Da Mota Melo, Danielle Caroline; Costa Brandao, Manoela; De Albuquerque, Simone Maria; Neumann-leitão, Sigrid.
This is the first study in Brazil to propose a trophic relationship between Chaetognatha and Cnidaria based on molecular data (COI gene - DNA barcode). Cnidaria COI sequences were detected in tissue samples from two specimens of Flaccisagitta enflata collected in the surroundings of Fernando de Noronha archipelago, Tropical Western Atlantic. The methodology used followed all the requirements for a safe molecular manipulation, making the possibility of contamination unlikely. A search carried in BLAST showed that both sequences provided here presented a combination of highest query coverage and match identity with Nemopilema nomurai (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa), supporting the hypothesis that they belong to a species of jellyfish. Since gelatinous taxa are known...

Pyruvate kinase activity as index of carbohydrate assimilation by mesozooplankton: an early field implementation in the Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Herbland, Alain.
Estimates of carbohydrate assimilation within the mesozooplankton compartment are a fundamental concern in oceanography because they give a general expression of the biologically-regulated incorporation of metabolic fuel produced from inorganic nutrients by phytoplankton in the sea. A new tool is proposed for the assessment of such processes. It is based on the measurement of the activity of an enzyme, pyruvate kinase (PK), on samples of the whole mesozooplankton community. Here, the results are presented of an early attempt at such an implementation in the Bay of Biscay (north-east Atlantic) in springtime. A main area situated in front of an estuary (Gironde) has been extensively studied-the same sampling grid was covered on three occasions (two 20 day...
